Open MIS-Understandings
Debate Series
“Open MIS-Understandings” aims to make explicit and discuss critically conceptual and methodological foundations and understandings from different disciplinary perspectives in interdisciplinary collaborations.
This debate series is an initiative of the Key Research Area “MIS – Migration and Inclusive Societies” and an internal forum of the Faculty aiming to promote interdisciplinary exchange on central concepts of migration research. MIS brings together FHSE researchers from cultural studies and social science whose work deals with questions of migration and borders. The aim of “Open MIS-Understandings” is to make explicit and discuss critically conceptual and methodological foundations and understandings from different disciplinary perspectives in interdisciplinary collaborations.
Each session (1 hour) brings together at least two FHSE researchers who each present a particular concept against the background of their disciplinary perspectives. In the joint discussion, the different facets will be bundled and a broader as well as more differentiated understanding will be developed.

The next Open MIS-Understanding session is dedicated to methods and methodological issues. Although migration research is becoming increasingly differentiated depending on the epistemological focus, an increased interest in qualitative methods can be observed. Linked to this are questions about the role of the research subject, practiced research ethics, participatory approaches or the (innovative) use of media. These and other aspects of current migration research will be discussed by the invited guests from the social sciences and cultural studies.

In the second “Open MIS-Understandings” session, we continue focusing on the concept of “inclusion” or “inclusiveness” and explore this concept in greater depth. Following the renaming of the Key Area MIS (“inclusive societies”) this concept has led to lively debates. Its diverse and programmatic uses beyond academia and in different disciplines also show that there is a need for general clarification. In doing so, counter – concepts (“exclusion”, “unwanted inclusion”) can also be made productive.
